Conversations with Disbelievers
website dedicated to this report which presents findings about business attitudes towards corporate responsibility. i read the report about a year ago; it was compelling to me, but i don't know if i should be the target audience (and i think i am). there wasn't much in the way of quantitative data that would make a CEO change the way she thinks about running a company that practices ethical, responsible behavior. why is this information so hard to come by...has it not been researched, or is the data not positive?

BusinessWeek - Biotech's Babies:Doing Well by Doing Good
article in BW about how Big Pharma is pulling out of the low margin vaccine business, which creates opportunities for smaller players. is this a good thing? the article makes the case that perhaps it does. there's obviously more of a business slant to the article, which makes me think i need to delve into this more...

enlightened ceo
i have to hand it to marc benioff, of salesforce.com. he's made corporate philanthropy and community involvement core components of his company from the beginning. from all accounts, he's delivering on his promises. he advocates a business model that, "...closely aligns business and community goals and focuses on serving the communities in which a business operates." admirable. benioff will be taking this message to the World Economic Forum in davos, and is publishing a book, Compassionate Capitalism: How Corporations Can Make Doing Good an Integral Part of Doing Well. it will be published in march, but it's already selling well on amazon.

jobs
here's a list of some jobs in the fields of accountability/compliance, corporate-community relations, public affairs, etc: http://www.bsr.org/jobs/csr/index.cfm

if so many companies trumpet their dedication to community involvement, why is this list not packed with opportunities?

so many companies are now staking claims to be good corporate citizens, but are they actually doing anything that will have a lasting impact? that's what i hope to explore...i hope i'm not disappointed.

starbucks today announced that they're committing to helping small-scale coffee bean producers...i actually think starbuck's lives by an ethical code and that their intentions are correct, but will this mean that more small-scale producers will have access to capital and markets? we shall see
